Concord West Station - Safety Screens

The screens were pre-fabricated over a number of weeks by RMD Sydney and installed during a 48 hour shutdown period, including night work by Arenco.

The screens enable the contractor to maintain work on the site without affecting the train lines at all.

The client, Arenco requested RMD Australia to provide a solution for some screening and a work platform, which needed to be suspended below the pre-cast planks of a pedestrian bridge over the railway lines near an existing station. The tracks were to be kept in use while the bridge was constructed, including the walls and roof. The screens enable the contractor to maintain work on the site without affecting the train lines at all.

The design had to be very specific with regards to locating the equipment
Some difficulties with the design were associated with the live 33,000 volt wires which are as close as 250mm to some of our RMD Super Slims. Therefore the design had to be very specific with regards to locating the equipment. RMD Australia’s design team for this project, Emilio Barone, Matthew Reynolds and Kevin Quinlan, worked tirelessly on a very tight program to produce a working solution. There were quite a few alterations so full credit to the Engineering team for their persistence.

Screens were pre-fabricated over a number of weeks and installed during a 48 hour shutdown period, including night work. Matt Anderson, one of RMD Sydney’s Sales Representatives attended the site regularly during these times to assist the client as much as he could. The main components of the structure are Super Slims, LVL, plywood and mesh. They are suspended on bar ties which run up between the bridge planks, bolted at the top with full nuts and Super Slim end plates, which are then cast in to the concrete pour of the bridge deck.

The client found our design and system a very effective solution
Matt Anderson indicated that, “The screens will remain in place for 6 months and further screens will be added during the normal operation of the railway lines after this initial installation. The client found our design and system to be a very effective solution and has been very happy with the service provided by RMD Sydney regarding the organization of the complicated delivery schedule, and the ongoing site assistance from myself. The project team has also expressed their intention to deal with me again on a similar project as their expectations have been fully met.”
