Ascent – Screen Climbing Formwork Used For Perth Children’s Hospital
Located in Nedlands, the Perth Children’s Hospital is the new home for staff and services from Princess Margaret Hospital in Subiaco, providing specialist paediatric care for the children and adolescents of Western Australia. RMD Australia’s Perth Branch was involved in a number of different aspects of the construction of the Perth Children’s Hospital project.
RMD Ascent-Formwork System
RMD supplied the new Ascent-Formwork guided climbing system to John Holland, who used the system in crane assisted mode to form two stair cores and two lift cores. Each individual core was design engineered by RMD and commissioned on site with the structural contractor.The largest core formed using the Ascent system measured some 20.725m x 8.0m in plan and was climbed vertically through 58.95m with each ‘floor to floor’ pour requiring approximately 107m3 of concrete.
Chosen due to its safety feature and benefits
The RMD Ascent-Formwork system was chosen due to its versatility and suitability for the project, with a majority of the system prefabricated ‘off site’ and ‘off program’. Safety features and benefits such as the ability to climb the Ascent system through multiple lifts, whilst remaining securely attached to the permanent structure and access for all trades inclusive of stretcher rescue capability, were key strengths of the Ascent-Formwork system. Safe access for steel fixing through the retractable capability of the external forms, coupled with an integrated working platform, was incorporated into the Ascent-Formwork design for fixing the reinforcement at height.
800t of its modular scaffold system Rapidstage
RMD was also contracted to supply approximately 800t of its modular scaffold system Rapidstage to the project, primarily for edge protection and access to various elevations of the project. The system was fully designed by RMD in close consultation with John Holland, to ensure efficient use and safe access to all required areas.
Minima panel system was used for the ground works
RMD’s Minima panel system was used for the ground works, which involved approximately one hundred pile and core caps. RMD’s Minima panel formwork system is lightweight, robust and versatile and most panels can be set by hand.
RMD provided innovative, safe and highly productive formwork and scaffolding solutions, supported by comprehensive engineered drawings and sales management throughout the project.
