RMD Newcastle has supplied equipment to all 25 bridges on the Abigroup section.
Hex is the second section of the Hunter Valley Expressway. Thiess built the Newcastle to Kurri Kurri section and Abigroup the Kurri Kurri to Branxton segment, RMD Newcastle has supplied equipment to all 25 bridges on the Abigroup section, including edge protection, access solutions to bridge abutments, shoring, cast in-situ bridge deck systems and the Paraslim system providing bridge deck cantilevers.
Rapidshor/Superslim/Alform Beam provides a cost effective and efficient solution for cast in-situ bridge decks
Primarily the Rapidshor system was used for abutments, suspended piers, headstock and four cast in-situ voided bridge deck slabs. Many Super Slim Soldiers and Alform Beams were also used across these sites, plus the Paraslim system for rail bridges. Rapidshor/Superslim/Alform Beam provides a cost effective and efficient solution for cast in-situ bridge decks and our knowledge and design capabilities enabled us to win this business.

The Paraslim system is unlike any other system. It is unique to RMD and provides the best method of forming and accessing the concrete slab for steel girder style bridge decks, fast and efficiently. Paraslim can be lifted as separate modules by a crane, which was critical for rail possessions, as was its speed of assembly and dismantling.
The next interesting structure we supplied was the Twin Bridges over Main North Railway where we supplied two large sets of Paraslim equipment, only the second of its kind in Australia to date – or so we have been told!
Abigroup have hired the majority of equipment but have invested heavily in edge protection equipment and plywood for super- t boats.
“On Abigroup’s Hunter Expressway D&C Project we have used various RMD systems including the Paraslim and Rapidshor systems. At an early stage in the process the RMD design team were able to provide a shoring and formwork solution which through joint review and discussion we were able to develop into an efficient final design for our post tensioned bridge decks. The use of the Paraslim system for the deck cantilever sections on our steel box girder bridge over the Main Northern Railway Line was extremely effective, this provided quick and safe installation and removal which allowed us to maximise our work scope during rail possessions. Again working with the RMD design team at an early stage we were able to incorporate this detail within the permanent works design and girder fabrication”.
