Parramatta Road Ventilation Facility
The M4 East will extend the existing M4 from Homebush to Haberfield via underground twin tunnels, each 5.5 kilometres in length and will be amongst the widest in the southern hemisphere. They will allow for three lanes of traffic in each direction, saving travel time for motorists and taking traffic off local roads.
A key aspect of this project is the Parramatta Road Ventilation Facility building (PRVF) that houses large fans that connect to twin tunnels at Haberfield NSW.
It will have very little impact on local air quality
The PRVF tunnel ventilation system is being designed to meet stringent in-tunnel, local and regional air quality criteria imposed by the Department of Planning and Environment under the Conditions of Approval. It will ensure air quality inside the tunnel is maintained and the tunnel has negligible impact on local and regional air quality.
Compliance testing will ensure air quality is maintained
The WestConnex ventilation system will be a longitudinal system with air drawn in the entry portals by moving traffic. Ventilation outlets located at the western and eastern ends of the tunnel draw fresh air from outside the portal, which is combined with tunnel air before it’s emitted into the atmosphere via the outlet where it’s further diluted and dispersed. Monitoring stations, modelling and compliance testing will also make sure air quality is maintained. Monitoring results will be made publicly available and will be independently audited.
The building has 3 basement levels, around 60m below ground and a few split levels above ground, the suspended slabs and beams vary in depth from 300mm to 1700mm.
RMD Australia’s Rapidshor shoring system was the clear winning solution for this construction project with its 74kN leg load and strong and reliable modular captive deck, providing a strong and safe working platform for the contractors.
RMD has worked closely with the Builders and Subcontractors
RMD have worked closely with the Builder CSJ J/V (CPB, John Hollands, and Samsung) and the subcontractors to provide a very safe and efficient Rapidshor shoring system with around 500 tonnes of shoring spread across 3 shafts that will remain on site well into 2018. RMD Australia’s worldwide design and Engineering experience came up with the exceptional design, to put it simply, they managed to put a square peg into a round hole.
RMD Australia’s 74kN Rapidshor shoring system was combined with RMD’s Aluminium Beams (primary bearers), called Alform Beam and Albeam, which enabled RMD designers to increase the efficiency of the shoring system further and were able to provide a complete package, ultimately reducing the number of components that save the client time and money, whilst maintaining safety.
